In the context of rapidly changing social and cultural dynamics, it is essential to address the specific mental and public health needs and challenges faced by sexually and gender diverse people. Recent evidence increasingly demonstrates that members of this population (i.e. in particular gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, non-binary or generally people who see themselves as queer or as part of the LGBTQ+ community) face specific challenges and needs.
Objectives of the working group:
- To develop quantitative and qualitative research to increase understanding of the factors that influence the mental and public health of sexually and gender diverse people, i.e., in particular factors such as stigma (minority stress) or other intersectional factors, and to develop related explanatory frameworks; to increase understanding of developmental factors in identity development, etc.
- Introduce and develop measurement tools, including psychometric scales and questionnaires, in the areas of minority stress and identity, the process of transition, social inclusion, suicidality, etc.
- To apply the findings in the development of interventions such as mental health programmes or various public health policies that will help to reduce the problems of the target groups, for example, in improving the effectiveness of mental health services, care delivery, suicidality prevention, HIV, chemsex, etc.
- Contribute to a cultivated public debate through academic publications, conferences and social media. Promote debate based on evidence-based science (e.g. on the harms of 'conversion therapies', highlighting the need to address the structural determinants of LGBTQ+ health - e.g. compulsory sterilisation, the role of institutions in tackling intolerance, etc.)
- Collaborate with experts and teams with proven excellence at international level, including academic institutions and NGOs. Contribute to two-way international dialogue and knowledge transfer.
- Educate professionals and future leaders through workshops, seminars and online courses.
