Being alone can have both positive and negative impacts on human life. While loneliness can lead to unpleasant feelings and potentially severe mental and physical health consequences, solitude can promote growth and relaxation. Studies indicate that loneliness is increasing across the European Union, and those dealing with mental health problems are particularly vulnerable. However, studies often overlook the positive aspects of being alone. Hence, this mix-methods project aims to evaluate the experiences of loneliness, solitude, and motivation for being alone in a sample of 300 individuals from community and mixed clinical groups. Additionally, the project aims to examine association with other variables such as quality of life or personality functioning. By exploring both positive and negative aspects of being alone, this research aims to better understand their complex relationship. Examining their interconnection can provide important insights for mental health care and public policies.
